Blitz deaths

Hello,
I have been doing a bit of research on Stockwell, where my gran lived until 1970. I understand that the Prince of Wales pub was bombed in 294 Clapham Rd and had many fatalities, I counted at least 43. This happened 13/10 1940.
Does anyone have any stories or details on this please ?

Try Ministry of Home Security Bomb Census Survey 1940-1945 Domestic Records Information 1081, via The National Archives of the United Kingdom.

Let us know if it works, and how much info you get from it please.

I have sent Lambeth an enquiry but have just been trying to search Catalogue at NA giving those references you gave me , but to no avail, so I have sent them an e-mail also .

You should see "The Blitz - Then and Now", published by After the Battle. This is the definitive work on the subject. It's a major tome and therefore quite pricey; but there should be a copy in your local library. I do not have my copy to hand or I could help you further. BTW, I see that the date you quote was a Sunday. I know that a German pilot was lynched near the Oval one Sunday lunchtime ... could this be the same raid? Certainly the book above gives information on this. As far as I remember, no one was charged.

I've just found details of the lynching in Kennington via Google. It was the same area, but not that date. The date in question was 15.9.1940 and the victim was Oberleutnant (= Flying Officer) Robert Zehbe of the bomber unit KG76.

There is a German site devoted to the lynching of airmen at:-

The one on 15/09/40 is reported; a quick translation reads as follows:-

Murder of German Oberleutnant (= flying officer) Robert Zehbe (pilot with KG 76) by civilians in the London district of Kennington. The case was researched by Dr Klaus Schmider, German lecturer in military history at Sandhurst. Source, Alfred Price, Battle of Britain Day, 15 September 1940, published in London 1990, page 63.

Google brings up 73 hits for "Robert Zehbe".

He died in hospital the following day after being rescued by the police. The cause of death is unclear ... was it from wounds sustained in the air? Or from injuries at the hands of the mob? It would be interesting to know Dr Klaus Schmider's findings.

No problem mate. Try an NA search just using the term "Bomb Census" it's the top result, it's a relatively new development to speed up research on blitz bombings, but it's never worked for me as it insists I'm java disabled, which I'm not.

I thought I would just let you have report from NA. There is not a file for bombing of Prince Of Wales but Home Security Intelligence Summary No 814 mentions 4 high explosive bombs and one oil bomb dropped on the borough Of Lambeth at about 20-00 hrs on 13 Oct 1940 doing considerable damage and causing casualties which are estimated at about 50 persons { NA HO 198/38 } No further details of the bombing are given
I hope this was of interest.
