Just read in my local newspaper that Freddie Adams of North Shields died on 11th Aug, aged 85. His funeral was held today at Preston cemetry, North Shields.
Freddie was part of 7th Battalion parachute Reg involved in the taking of the Caen Canal Bridge.

RIP Old mate.
It always surprises me that so many men claim to have been at Pegasus. When we were there under fire. there was very few.
So another good man has gone.,They are getting few on the ground now.

The highest respect and admiration to all who served in WW2 including the civilians who lived through it our generation will never fully appreciate the Sacrifices that everyone who lived through that era went through. My 8yr old son recentley asked what 'lest we forget' meant.......... i did my best to explain.

How can you measure pride ?

The proudest moment I ever saw was the 50th D day Anniversary celebrations when the survivors of the assault on the Caen canal bridge marched across it.

Quite a good book on the Pegasus Bridge role of the 7th Btn called 'The Tale of Two Bridges' based to some extent on the diary of the wonderfully named 7th Btn CO Pine-Coffin.......

7th (Light Infantry ) Bn Parachute Regt relieved John Howards Coup de main force at Pegasus Bridge in the very early hours of D Day ( the actual time has always been in dispute ) but certainly no later than 2.30am and probably much earlier , and Howards Force then came unde Pine-Coffins command.

7 Para then crossed over the Bridge and held the Benouville Bridgehead throughout D Day suffering heavy losses.

I have had the honour to visit Pegasus Bridge and Benouville on a few occasions with 7 Para veterans and what a great bunch of fellas they were

regards

Paul
