Info required 17th London Regiment

Hi all,

My wife is doing her tree again sorry

She would like to know a bit more regarding her Great grandfather Private Alfred James Bettis who signed up to fight in 1915 and was discharged through sickness only 8 months later

The death certificate states

Cause of death:

1) 10 days Influenza
2) Acute Pneumonia

Here's what she would like to know indeed me to..

What was the Territorial force on top of the 4 year sign up mean?
where was he serving during the time he served...where would he have been trained and set sail from and too? The general sort of info to create a picture....

and what most importantly would have his discharge and illness been caused by would it have been from the damp etc from the trenches or a gas attack??

Thanks in advance

Lee

Lee,

A few details here:

The London Regiment in 1914-1918

Do you know if he was in the 1/17th (47th Division) or 2/17th (60th Division). Would help to pin point where he served perhaps.

I have a photo from the 2/17th (somewhere) but it is only a xerox photocopy.

I guess influenza was common, even before the 1918 affair.

1/17th (County of London) Battalion (Poplar and Stepney Rifles)
August 1914 : at 66 Tredegar Road, Bow. Part of 5th London Brigade, 2nd London Division. Moved on mobilisation to St Albans.
10 March 1915 : landed at Le Havre.
11 May 1915 : formation became 141st Brigade in 47th (2nd London) Division.
