Wilhelm -
the only two German songs I know of from that period were " Lili Marlene" and Sagbeim abscheid liese servus"
the "Horst Vessal" was a true nazi song - along with "Wir gehen nach England " !

Cheers

Not sure if this is what you mean. A wonderful song popular on both sides.

LILI MARLEN
By Norbert Schultz

Underneath the lantern, by the barrack gate,
Darling I remember the way you used to wait.
'Twas there that you whispered tenderly,
That you loved me, You'd always be,
My Lili of the lamplight, My own Lili Marlene.

Time would come for roll call, Time for us to part,
Darling I'd caress you and press you to my heart,
And there 'neath that far off lantern light,
I'd hold you tight, We'd kiss good-night,
My Lili of the lamplight, My own Lili Marlene.

Orders came for sailing somewhere over there,
All confined to barracks was more than I could bear;
I knew you were waiting in the street,
I heard your feet, But could not meet,
My Lili of the lamplight, My own Lili Marlene.

Resting in a billet, just behind the line,
Even tho'we're parted, your lips are close to mine.
You wait where that lantern softly gleams.
Your sweet face seems to haunt my dreams.
My Lili of the lamplight, My own Lili Marlene.

Going slightly off thread, I remember we discussed evocative WW2 Italian songs here: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/general...membering.html
and the unforgettable D-Day Dodgers, sung to the tune of Lili Marlene, here: http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/italy/3...y-dodgers.html

I was "called-up", as a 19 year old, on the 1st of Oct 1942 and was one of 5 serving brothers, one of whom, Jack, was in RAF Bomber Command and was killed on March 16th 1945.

I served as a Driver/Op (Wireless Operator) with the 49th Light Anti Aircraft Rgt. (78 Div) from Apr 1943 to Dec 1944 (North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Egypt). The Regiment was disbanded in Dec 1944 and I was retrained (in Italy) by the RAC.

Finally, I
served as Loader/Op with the 4th Queen's Own Hussars (6th Armd & 56 Div) from Mar 1945 to Dec 1946 (Italy, Austria, Germany) finishing up as Tech Cpl. for "A" Sqdrn. I was "De-mobbed" in Apr 1947

Athomedad-
I recall vividly Jan Kiepura singing his head of in a movie on board a sailing ship long before the war- and thought he was every bit as good as the singers of his day at that time....just a flash of memory now and again -thanks for reminding me of his great voice - even before Tauber

Cheers

Maybe songs that may be heard in WWII documentaries or movies from that era of the "good" times there. I assume there is a collection of these somewhere... a free collection, I'm hoping.
Hans Albers was very popular during and after the war and has an interesting biog to say the least - see here:
Hans Albers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Being from Hamburg his songs are often about seafaring and the nightlife in his home town. I seem to remember him being considered a little risque.
