Also, very few american subs were sunk by japanese naval Air power.
American forces had quite a lot of air power available to them, from carriers, island bases etc. Any axis naval forces operating in the Pacific against the Japanese would be totaly lacking in air cover, therefore the Japanese air forces would have free range to strike at subs. a totaly different situation to that which the Americans faced.

given the lack of asv radar and sonnar fitted to jap aircraft and ships then they would have to employ large numbers of assests to find the sub.

also, I know it is hyperthetical but I am sure the axis would try and capture some form of bridgehead with which to maintain a base in the area.

I agree a lot of fun and we have not even started to suggest how both sides would try and court friendship with neutral powers yet fos use of harbours re-supply etc.

I doubt Britain would let the Japanese or Axis use any of the ports in the Empire such as Singapore but I suppose many neutral nations would make millions of pound from selling arms to the nations.

Yeah, but stodgy old me, I just have a thing about counterfactual history.

There are a few more credible "what ifs" in the war against Japan, such as;

- could the fall of Singapore have been prevented?

- what if the US carriers were at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked?

- what if the Japanese had tried to invade Australia?

Yes! The defence of singapore was wargamed in Quettra Staff college and the nearest model they created that matched the actual events was dome in 1926. The then Lt Col Percival was one of the men how took part in that wargame!

However, to successfully implement the defence upgrades would require money which no one was prepared to provide!

Difficult call that one, the american carriers had wooden decking as opposed to the armoured ones on RN ships and so were very vulnerable. Also, their aircraft would have been deployed ashore and as it was a sunday, the crews would have been off duty.

The plan was to fall back into the outback, where the japanese were not trained for and thier loc would be extended and be subjected to attack by the allies.
