This could be a thread in its own right (What were the factors that contributed to the start of WW2?) which has been discussed on previous occasions.

![]() | im not sure what you can say is the biggest mistake, but i think there are a couple of points need to be mentioned about the early part of the war. Turning on russia, i believe, cannot possibly be described as a 'mistake' by hitler because really that was what the war was for...taking out western europe was merely paving the way for the real objective...russia. now, i think this point is critical. Germany never had a chance of militarily defeating britain in 1940. All she could hope for was the british withdrawing from hostilities. The real battle of britian was the battle of the atlantic. No serious historian would claim that Hitler ever intended to aggressively invade the united kingdom. Even had the RAF been all but destroyed in 1940, an invasion of britain would have been suicidal. Hitler knew this very well. Interestingly, during the 1970s there was a war game enacted by british forces tactical commanders, using actual german commanders of the time following the plans of operation sealion. the result was the annihilation of 90,000 german troops. Sealion and the battle of britain were an attempt to get britain to withdraw from the war...hitler didnt at any time consider britain a miliary objective. By the time that britain became strategically important, the war was already lost...the only thing that remained open to question was how much territory would be taken by the soviets. in my view, what lost the war for germany was a combination of many things...but the one thing that i feel lost them the chance of ever actually winning the war was stalingrad. Hitler built up an obsession with it, employing a take it at all cost stance....they could have withdrawn in 42, gone around it and taken the baltic oilfields. Moscow then most suredly would have fallen in 43 with the help of the 6th army. Last edited by nutleyeng; 13-10-2006 at 06:34 PM. |

![]() | i can't remember if i have posted or not. I shall assume not so here goes. Hitler's biggest mistakes: Bringing USA into the War Attacking Russia Stopping bombing the RAF bases The Holocaust (as he could have had something like 4-6 million extra soldiers) I might post some allied mistakes at a later date. |

![]() | One of the reasons Hitler attacked Russia is, i think, for the oil fields. He could easily have gone through Turkey and surly would have got oil, but with less casualties |
