Kiwi, I am horrified, Absolutely Horrified!

Why in Gods name would you leave beautiful New Zealand for Newark(YUK). BTW my office used to be in White Plains and I lived in Bronxville. So I know the turf.

I had no choice in the matter...my tour of duty there and term in the Navy was up. Our original plan was to stay there, and I intend to at least be buried in the veterans' section in Christchurch, as a paid-up member of the Papanui RSA.

Newark is where Kathy lived before we got married, so we went back, which worked out well, as the city has a residency requirement for its employees.

Tyrulf,

I would say that you have a reasonable foundation in English but you need to fine tune it.

You need also to further your history studies, looking deeper into the issues for a rational balanced view.

For the record,no blame can be attached to the present German generation for the crimes committed against humanity by Hitler's Germany. It is a fact that the numbers of people who have a personal recollection of Hitler's life and the Germany of yesteryear are rapidly dwindling. It is likely that victims of Nazism and those effected will still remember Germany's crimes until the day they die.Whether they forgive is a different matter but it is important that the account of what occured is not distorted.

From my personal experience I have never heard of any taunting of German citizens regarding the war but no doubt it could occur but it should be remembered that a large number of ex German POWs chose to settle in Britain on their release.A large number were re-educated in meaning of democracy which transformed their lives, lives which had been indoctrinated on racial hatred and militarism.

Consider peoples of helpless and innocent countries on which Germany waged an evil and aggressive war simply because Hitler deemed them to be sub human and only fit for slaves. What do the Russians, the Poles, the Yugoslavs and the Czechs think about where German guilt lies. What about the French and they had the pro German, anti Allied puppet government of Vichy.

Unfortunately the trend over the last 20 years has been a revisionist approach to European history in accounting the suffering of the German people as being beyond that necessary to defeat Nazism. However there can be no doubt that the horror inflicted by the Nazis in Europe in the name of Germany far exceeds the horror inflicted by the Western Allies and Russia to Germany in defeating Nazism and German militarism.Study about the German thrust into Russia with no regard to man or beast.

There is also the point that it was thought that the majority of Germans were filled with pride with the early victories when Germany overran the greater part of Europe and were seen to be backing Hitler. There was also some disappointment by Allied populations that there was little if any evidence of resistance to the regime from inner Germany. We know now that without the German Wehrmacht involvement that resistance could never succeed despite gallant attempts by certain individuals.History now reveals that the Wehrmacht had been seduced by Hitler from 1937 when he gave it involvement in what was to be the plan for German expansion and the unifying of German speaking peoples.Without military leadership involvement, overthrowing of the regime was extremely unlikely.

Your mother was lucky to be born when she was.Her birth era saw the start of the West German recovery and the economic miracle and would not have happened had it been for the US Marshall Plan, financial funding that did not apply to Great Britain.Great Britain was near to bankruptcy caused by war with Germany in an effort to prevent German expansion and its people suffered, postwar as a result.

Azores?

Are you on São Miguel at Ponta Delgada or one of the other main islands?

Must be getting a little warmer now!

Many ships were sunk to the north of their during the war.

How the chuff did we get on to Kiwi's living situation? As interesting as it is...
Wish i was in the Azores right now. I'm currently sat at a library computer in the Universty of Derby college Buxton. There's snow on the ground and touching -3 outside. Talking of uni, does anybody know anything about the geography of northern Norway? Just asking.
Tyrulf, may i defend myself? I never called you a Nazi! I just think you really really need to buy an English dictionary and learn some of the meanings of the words you are using, because having read back through your posts now i have had time, i think the fact a lot of us have come down on your head is because you have phrased things oddly. However, i must say your english is a damn sight better than my German.
Get a good dictionary and check any words you are unsure of. Because in my worst nightmares i would NEVER call Hitler 'kinky'. Horrible thought...
I think that is the problem, your phraseology. Other than that, i think you are coming on well. But if i ever see another obnoxious post like that, i will come over there and slap your legs. An dbe willign to learn. I have learnt so much since posting here, it's put my GCSE History curriculum to shame.
Now go forth and buy a dictionary!
