Information Needed On Abbreviations In Service Record

Help! The long awaited Service Record for Austin (Les) Castell, 944172, 85th Field/Mt R.A. (T.A.) has finally appeared but is causing some confusion.
Dismayed at the Army's preference for abbreviations, I am hoping that some of you may be able to assist me.

As written:

1. SOS MEF & TOS, PAIFORCE - We know Paiforce is Persia and Iraq Forces and MEF maybe Middle East Force, but as for SOS and TOS we have no idea!

2. S.O.S, M.E.F to CMF - 11/03/44

3. Does anyone know what the -X- list was within Artillery Regiments?

85th Field /Motor Transport / Royal Artillery (Territorial Army)?

As written:

SOS = Struck off Strenth of a unit

TOS = Taken on Strength of a unit

2. S.O.S, Struck off Strength of M.E.F Middle East Force to CMF Central Mediterranean Force? - 11/03/44

3. Does anyone know what the -X- list was within Artillery Regiments?

Many thanks for the quick reply. The Mt is an abbreviation of Mountain (my error, sorry if it misled anyone).

2. U/M/L/Bdr
3. P/A/L/Bdr
4. 'Forfeits one days pay under R.W. for WOAS. See 15 (1) A.A. Date of award 24/04/42' - what sort of award would this have been?!

The way (4) reads the award may have been some time in the clink.

15 (1) of the army act I think means a "misdemeanour" of some kind

What makes you believe that Mt is mountain?

85th Field Regiment became 85th Mountain Regiment in September 1943, training in Lebanon at the Mountain Warfare Training School.
Have met with another old soldier who served with this regiment and fortunately does not live too far from me. There was also another British Regiment serving as Mountain in Italy - 7th Mountain Regiment.
85th were requested for their specialist artillery by units such as Popski's Private Army, Lovat's Scouts and both 4th and 10th Indian - coming under the command of 4th and 10th Indian at times during the Italian Campaign.

Yes the abbreviations can become quite confusing at times.

There was a post a couple of weeks ago with the same 15(1) of the army act which seemed to point to the person having been incarcerated for a short period.

Hopefully someone will know the particular section and advise us.

I don't know if that is what he being recalled, but, either way, if anyone knows any way of finding out these things I'd love to hear about it.

I have brought the service records of mine posted here to several museums and records centres to ask if the archivist / curator can tell me anything about them but I've never learnt a thing about this misdameneour on the records. I've also posted online in many places asking for help but nothing ever.

In my case there is actually a reference to the City of London Sessions and I had these searched also, but not a thing... The guy there kept saying how odd it was he thought that there was no record of this as apparently all the City of London Sessions records of that time survived and are in order, but it is no surprise to me at this stage!
