I remember reading somewhere that he had been nauseated by the casualties and waste at the Somme. And is it trrue that at the time of the Normadny landings, Gallipoli was on his mind too? But I suppose the Great War must have haunted many of the leaders of the Second War.

Fears that Normandy would become another Gallipoli or would be as difficuilt as Anzio were at the forefront of Churchills mind. Allanbrooke claims to have constantly had to reassure the PM on this score.
