![]() | Churchill Quotes If we're having a thread for Hilter quotes, can we have one for Churchill ones? One of my own favourites is the joke it is claimed he used to tell in after dinner speeches: 'One incident preserved by General Ismay in an apocryphal and somewhat lively form may be allowed to lighten the narrative. His orderly, a Royal Marine, was shown the sights of Moscow by one of the Intourist guides. "This," said the Russian, is the Eden Hotel, formerly the Ribbentrop Hotel. Here is Churchill Street, formerly Hitler Street. Here is the Beaverbrook railway station, formerly Goering railway station. Will you have a cigarette, comrade?" The Marine replied, "Thank you, comrade, formerly bastard!"' Marina |

![]() | My favourites are still the classics: "Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so many to so few" The "we shall never surrender" speech and a few others I will need to look up.

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I am still narked how Bush et al quote Churchill to strengthen their arguements. What do others think? Without hijacking the thread. I feel he's OUR best ever leader. Not yours hands off! Bit like us Brits can moan about this country but as soon as anyone else does the hackles go up! Last edited by Owen; 07-06-2006 at 11:40 PM. |

I always liked this exchange with Lady Astor: "Winston, if I were your wife I'd put poison in your coffee." "Nancy, if I were your husband I'd drink it." (Re Churchill Hijack Owen, It is balls isn't it. Worse is MP's who think they're being Churchillian when in fact they're juuuusssst speeeeakiiiinggg veeeeerrrrryyy sllllloooooooooowwwly. I suspect Oratory may be largely dead.) | |

![]() ![]() ![]() | Thanks Owen. ![]() That Does look strangely familiar to me, I feel Cosy Now. And Here's a quote for the Canadian Contingent to get a Rosy Glow off. "Canada is the linchpin of the English-speaking world. Canada, with those relations of friendly, affectionate intimacy with the United States on the one hand and with her unswerving fidelity to the British Commonwealth and the Motherland on the other, is the link which joins together these great branches of the human family, a link which, spanning the oceans, brings the continents into their true relation and will prevent in future generations any growth of division between the proud and the happy nations of Europe and the great countries which have come into existence in the New World." (P.S. Keep sending the tanks, Cheers, winston.) |
