question

Yes: France, Belgium, Holland, Germany. (Not meant to sound facetious)

They probably did in theory however it was thought that with the strength of the Atlantic wall that the allies would not get off the beach.

Quote:
did they occupy the french fortifications of the maginot line.
Most of the equipment was looted to reinforce the Atlantic wall.

The line saw little action until 1944, although the Germans used it for storage and spare parts. The Allies fought through a small portion of the line around Metz in the fall of 1944 and in northern Alsace in December.

I have visited a number of Maginot sites all over France, and almost without fail, most of them saw action in 1944. I used to pass a system of Maginot bunkers south of Mons (Belgium) which was the route to Mons followed by US units; the bunkers were used to slow them down and show signs of battle damage from the period.

From everything I have read there were German placements in the line however the only real encounters were at Metz & Alsace.

I suspect it depends on what you mean by 'real encounters'; most of these would be small scale skirmishes. In some cases the locals tell me that the AT rails and minefields were all still there in 1944, which meant passage in places was tough. Many villages in Northern France and southern Belgium have memorials to US units who lost men in these forgotten battles.

looking up 'AT rails' I found this site with excellent schematics of the line from overall maps down to bunker designs:
