Germania, in the glorious year of victories became a favourite name for girls born during 1940.

You will see Germi often used informally for the name and which records the history of this era.

While Berlin was under siege in April 1945, Hitler was still stooping over the drawing board and discussing his post war plans for Berlin and his favourite town, Linz

Amazing. I can almost hear Hitler saying to Speer "there are postive results to this boming, it is easier to clear away rubble than to demolish it" as in the movie Downfall. I wonder if he was planning to do a Nero if it were not for the war.

I love the story Speer told about the problems they had in designing the dome of the Kupferhalle. It was so big that there was an issue with indoor rainfall originating from the Hot air emanated by der fuehrers loyal followers!!!

Good photographs of the era of Speers Nazi modern classical creatability.Compare these with the state of the Chancellery after the Russians had taken Berlin and the looters had visited.

One of the Goebbels propaganda lines was that the Fuehrer and himself always had tidy desks,which in Goebbels mind demonstrated that him and the Fuehrer had tidy minds and was a personality trait that the regime wished to pass on to the German people.All part of the propaganda machine that these were the men on whose desks, the policy for the good of the German people and world political decisions were made and honed.

Every time I see pictures of the Reich Chancellery and see its vastness I'm always reminded of the quote from the film "Shrek": "Do you think he's trying to compensate for something?"

Actually one of Speer's concepts was what he called "ruin value", that is, that the structures themselves might look good when in a ruin state. See for example the Pyramids or the Parthenon as the basis for this idea of his.
