 | In the last week I was reading on MSN.com of black German servicemen and also of the large numbers of black people who were living in Germany at the time of hostilities. We have to bear in mind that these came from the former colony of Tanzania(Tanganyika) in East Africa and other German colonies. From the articles it was mentioned how these people were mistreated and how the whole incident was covered up or given no coverage. Considering that segregation was still prevalent in the US armed forces at the time, I can't image it getting much coverage especially with the Jewish atrocities and the concentration of the war effort of bringing Germany to it's knees. | Whilst browsing the site I came across this thread for the first time. The point on which I would like to make comment is the one that relates to the changing of a serviceman's religion on his identity disks, or as our American friends would have it, his Dog Tags. Speaking for myself, I never had my own ID Disk altered and do not rememember ever being asked if I wished to avail myself of this service. My late dear brother Jack, as a serving Air Gunner in Bomber Command evidently felt the same, as can be read in his son's moving story in the BBC Archives: "The night my father was killed in action" BBC - WW2 People's War - The night my father was killed in action
