![]() | Airfield Control Towers Please have a look at the photos attached. The pics are of the inside of the control tower at RAF Kingscliffe. The basic type 4532 design. Can anyone please tell me what the square hole in the ceiling was for and also what the brick box built into the corner was used for. I have seen this on all watch towers built to the same spec. Many Thanks Vincestorm Last edited by vincestorm; 09-06-2007 at 02:36 PM. |

![]() | The hole is probably for roof access - with a ladder. A lot of the control towers had their air raid sirens on the roof, as well as an observation post.

![]() | I was thinking along the same lines. But originally there would have been a steel staircase running from a side door up to the roof, why not use this to gain access to the roof instead of putting a ladder up? |

![]() | I think the roof access point is precisely that - access. with a step ladder it was quick access to the siren and/or gun that may have been up there. Could it have been an observation post as well for the station? As to the box, i have seen something similar but larger. Can't recall where though unless it was the Q-station at Betchton. Unusual. Do you have any other photos, or any ground plans? |

![]() | If there's a raid on then a quick way of getting down to the 'relative' safety of the tower is probably thought necessary.
