Portsdown Tunnels.

Fascinating website for anyone familiar (or not) with the Palmerston forts on Portsdown hill near Pompey who wanted to know a bit more about WW2 activities in the area, from Farlington to Cosham.

"Portsdown Tunnels - Researching the sites of Portsdown, Portsmouth, UK"

Some good 'then & now' shots.
Might have to print some of it out as a guide when I'm down there visiting the parents next as theres familiar locations with stuff pointed out I had no idea about.

Cheers,
Adam.

Hmmm....another interesting post....make me jealous...i live in Oz, where battle fields are non-existant, war sites only go back to World wWar Two, and the only Military Museum we have thats worth more than one visit is in the nations capital, far away from most buffs and researchers....frustrating if you've got a burdgeoning interest....
It makes my blood boil to see all this wonderful history going to wreck and ruin for the indifference of most, not in any way balanced by the interest shown by the 'few'...

Are we going to lose our military heritage because nobody can spare the money or the time to preserve it?

Are we headed for roughly the same level of national belligerancy that contributed to the wars outbreak?

The science fiction author Frank Herbert stated something in his book, "God Emperor of Dune", that if we had a leader, even someone viewed as a tyrant, IF we ever have somebody that can claim to rule us all...what would happen if this all powerful leader suddenly got up one day and declared armed conflict to be illegal, or he had an intelligence that enabled him to second guess truoble and be there with the peace keepers....what do you think will happen with an 'enforced peace'?

Herbert provides the answer, and it makes perfect sence....If you impose PEACE on a society, the inevitable reaction from the opoulace will be to SQUIRM....to be gradually less and less comfortable with the status quo.....discontent will spread, as people realise that a certain right has been removed from them, for their own good or not....the result of an enforced peace would be 'THE biggest war in history.......it's brewing in this fashion here, already, not 3 generations after the biggest bloodletting we have ever seen.....

The hero of Herberts novels, Paul Atriedes, he can speak to 'inner voices'...past lives that he has lead that nhis unique ability gave him the power of memory of the billions upon billions of lives that his generation stood on the shoulders of to get to this point n human history...one day, Emperor Paul is sitting in the throne room, when an inner voice makes him chuckle....an aide asks him why he is layghing at such a serious topic (the aide is telling him of the many BILLIONS of lives that the Emperors accession to power has caused)...Paul laughs again, and says,

"I've just had a memory of Emperor Hitler saying "nothing will ever surpass this....."

Von Poop; I'm so glad to see that Bob Hunt and his truly amazing site, " Portsdown Tunnels " has got a mention here. (Is it me or, is it not listed in the right hand Links list of worthy sites? )

I've personally been returning to PT's for years now. I love the site and have had a word or two with Bob - good man! His enthusiasm will cease only when he does. That's for sure. Talk about dedication!

Can't recommend Portsdown Tunnels too highly to you people here. Old Wars to Cold War; Bob has it covered, mapped, photographed and explained. Fascinating.

Christos; Your post made me think of the old (c.1970) David Bowie track. From the " The Man Who Sold The World " album.

Saviour Machine

President Joe once had a dream
The world held his hand, gave their pledge

So he told them his scheme for a Saviour Machine

They called it the Prayer, its answer was law
Its logic stopped war, gave them food
How they adored till it cried in its boredom

'Please don't believe in me, please disagree with me

Life is too easy, a plague seems quite feasible now
or maybe a war, or I may kill you all

Don't let me stay, don't let me stay
My logic says burn so send me away

Your minds are too green, I despise all I've seen
You can't stake your lives on a Saviour Machine'

Blast from the past there, eh?

Quite right, added to the links.
I think it's a lovely site, simple design but packed with information.
Every time I return I notice something that I'd previously missed, like the 'War diary' by Cosham's ARP/LDV (Historic Events>Cosham war Diaries).
