Why Nationalise Sugar?

Hi All,

Just reading through a few items that came with
A collection of photos and thought this may well
Interest a few people and bring a smile to our
Veterans on the site.

Ration Book Holder reads in the inside
Of the cover:-

Memo to Housewives (you wouldn’t getaway with that now).

We are doing everything possible
To speed the day when sugar
Rationing can end…

But-

There’s a move to nationalise sugar refining.

We feel this is NOT in your best interests,

Facts about sugar

(1) Shareholders only get 1/28th of every
Penny from 1-lb packet of sugar

(2) British refined sugar is still the
Cheapest and best in the world

(3) Our workers are happy. Over half
Have been with us more than 15 years.

This holder was presented with compliments
Of Tate and Lyle Limited London and Liverpool

The next is a clothing book with clothing coupons,
Could you imagine it?

Dad can I have a Nike tracksuite yeah OK son
Let me see if I’ve enough coupons…it wouldn’t
Would it? We don’t know were born!

And then we’ve a ration book 1953-54 issued
By the Ministry of Food.
Meat, Eggs, Fats, Cheese, Bacon and Sugar
Were still being rationed then 7years after
The War had ended. Some hard times that
We can only read about, its makes you think!

Cheers Kieron

Jim Clay is an unknown quantity at this point
We also had identity cards - which had to be updated if you moved. Recently found family ID cards which were updated when we moved in 1950. Don't know when this stopped. Any info?
