pretty amazing huh? I mean it cant be easy to transport a 2-10-0 locomotive you'd need a LCL (landing craft Loco). Makes a lot of sense really, i cant imagine the germans where keen to leave working rail stock just lying about.

Well, the MOD said that my Father-in-Law, although he ran the gauntlet every day/night from London to Dover etc carrying Ammo, Arms, Tanks, Army Personnel etc is not entitled to the Defence Medal!

I shouldn't get too upset about the Defence Medal. Tens of thousands of Servicemen (My Dad and Grandad included) didn't bother to claim their campaign medals on the basis that "if they can't be bothered to engrave my name on them, I can't be bothered to ask for them"

The MOD or its predecessors had, of course, no jurisdiction over Railwaymen and probably couldn't have awarded a medal if they had wanted to. This was also prior to nationalisation so technically Railway staff were employees of various private companies.

One could perhaps take the view that every citizen deserved a medal in 1945 but I think that most people were just glad that it was all over and that they had survived.

I can imagine the railwaymen being embarrassed to get a medal.
"I was only doing my job, chum" I hear them say.
