![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Were the Muslim SS the most anti-semitic ? Just wondering with the friction today between the two religions whether the Muslims serving in German units were more anti-semetic than your average Nazi? |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Well past the time when even a dental filling could deny entry to the SS, Funny how such previously 'important' standards were allowed to slip as the Nazi's slog got harder .As to the anti-semitism Owen, I don't know, there seems to only be one substantial looking work on the Handschar and I've never got around to buying it. Himmler's Bosnian Division Anyone read it?

![]() | The Handschar was just one of the Islamic formations in the German army - there were formations recruited from the Islamic areas of the USSR, Crimean Tartars, Lebenese and Arabs. See "The East Came West: Muslim, Hindu & Buddhist Volunteers in teh German Armed Forces."

![]() ![]() | By 1943,the medical requirements had been dropped due to the need for ever greater numbers of replacements for the German War Machine. Some fought as auxiliaries in the Hiwi category.Other found themselves pressed into Waffen SS Units. Overall as manpower losses impacted, any man and his dog could join the Waffen SS. The Germans took them from from Russia,Georgia, the Ukraine, the Crimea,Ruthenia,Cossacks from the Kuban peninsula,Turkestan,Tartars from the Upper Volga,Armenia,Aserbeidjan,Finnish Carelia and North Caucasia.Included in the latter were 150.000 Mohammedans as the Germans referred to them as who left with the German Army as it retreated from North Causasia. The German propaganda machine declared it as 'fighting for the rights of their peoples' The Soviet Union saw it rather differently. All these who could be grouped as Russian found themselves in Waffen Grenadierdivision der SS Russische Unit 1 or Unit 2,which after a short independent service were both absorbed into the Vlassov Army, the first unit in 1944,the second unit in 1945. The Waffen Gerirgsddivision der SS Hanschar were a particular vicious mob, mobilised to terrorise their fellow Yugoslavs. The self styled 'Grand Mufti of Jesusalem' was the recruiting sergeant for this unit and the cleric himself was a model anti-Semite which suited the Nazi political climate but above all he was rabid anti British. I cannot account for his fate at the fall of The Third Reich. |
