![]() | Hi! I am new here, and i know i cant ask this question without beaing called nazi but i try. How many did actually die? It says 6 million, and 1.5 million was killed in autswitc. But i doubt that so many died. Beacuse why dident they do any resitance? And dont say beacuse they dident know they were going to be killed (Ask yourself this how did 6 million jews dident know that they were going to get killed). And they were given a chance to either come with the nazis in the heart of Germany, or go east to the Russians. And in Norway were i come from we learn abaut the Holocaust in 4 subjects: History, Religion, Norwiegian and English, sean 3 films abaut it and read a book abaut it. And 20% wath we have learned abaut world war II at school is abaut the Holocaust. I had to ask what The Ghotic line was, We dident learn abaut it. Only how horibole it was for the Jews, Not gay's or crippled. And we had to areange a trip to Poland when i was 13. Why do we have to learn so much abaut it? I and why do we have them as turist atractions? And why is it so bad to lower the casualty of the jews? And why cant i say this without been called nazi at school? I would apriciate if you dont call me Nazi, beacuse i am not. And excuse my english but i am from Norway, and i usally youst got C in english. |

...You have a great deal to learn. Hard to figure out where to begin. First, we are nearly certain about the figure of 6 million dead. Yes, 1.5 million Jews were killed at Auschwitz. Many more were killed at other extermination camps and by SS Einsatzkommandos (mobile killing units) in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Others died from disease, starvation, overwork, torture, death marches, random shootings, and planned shootings. Thanks to German bureaucratic efficiency, we have vast amounts of surviving paperwork on the efficiency of the executions and how they were done. You comment on resistance: There was resistance. In most cases, it was heroic but futile, as the defense of the Warsaw Ghetto shows. 56,000 Jews died in that April 1943 battle. Your sentence: "They were given a chance to come east or go west," simply does not make sense and has no connection to history. I presume you are asking about the pre-war German moves to expel Polish-born Jews from Germany. The Germans did that. Then they conquered Poland and killed the very people they expelled. Your comment on why your teachers didn't mention the Gothic Line: the impact of a carefully organized, planned, bureaucratic genocide of an entire people for racist reasons is a heck of a lot more important than the battle for a German fortified line in northern Italy in 1944, and I write articles on that very subject for magazines. In the long run, as a human being, you need to know about genocide. You don't need to know about the Gothic Line. Your comment about "gays and cripples:" while anti-gay and euthansia practices were a major part of the Nazi extermination campaign, their assault on the Jews was the central feature. They planned to kill every single Jew, holding bureaucratic meetings on the subject. There have been increasing studies on the many other victims of Nazi persecution, which include (but you left out) the Gypsies (Roma), Jehovah's Witnesses, and Slavs, as well as their sterilization campaigns. Your comment on why you have to learn about the Holocaust: so that it doesn't happen again...so that bigots and racists can't come to power and make it happen again...so that people speak up and oppose such genocides when they happen again (Rwanda, Sudan, Cambodia, Bosnia), and so that young people understand the consequences of racist behavior, bullying, and hate...and don't practice it themselves in their own lives, neighborhoods, and worlds. As to why the camps are "turist attractions:" so as to enable generations of people to come to see the horror sites for themselves, so as to learn, reflect, and honor those who died. As to "why is it so bad to lower the casualty count:" Because doing so is a lie perpetrated by vicious anti-Semites and neo-Nazis whose main agenda is to rehabilitate Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, and legitimize anti-Semitism and anti-Semitic policies and acts. As to "why I can't say this without being called a Nazi at school:" Because such statements are the statements, acts, and views of Nazis. If you spout their rhetoric, you take on their mantel. As to why you are not learning all this, despite the apparent determination with which teachers and school are pushing Holocaust material....either you are already suffused with hatred towards Jews or loaded with ignorance and disinterest about the subject...or are simply a teenager who views history in terms of technology and toys, and as a grainy newsreel of stories, and admires the newsreels that show strutting Nazis in shiny uniforms and huge tanks conquering Europe. I suggest you learn, change, and grow up.

![]() | Well, this kid didn't even note my answer, so I guess he learned the adage, "Speak fitly or be silent wisely."
