I am looking into a Stanley James Payne of the 2nd Battery, 1st Lt AA Regiment, who is buried in Ancona War Cemetery.

His date of death is given by CWGC as 10/12/1942. I am by no means an expert on this but I was under the impression that British forces were not in Italy prior to 1943. If this is true can anyone help explain why Gunner Payne lies in Ancona?

Any suggestions or help appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks Malcolm. That suggestion makes sense.

Could anyone offer advice on how to track down whether and when a serviceman was made a POW?

Andrew, great pity I did not know about your request on Ancona. Just been there to photograph the headstone of a Sandbach man captured ion N Africa and died at Macerata prison camp, originally buried in Macerata Civil Cemetery (POW plot) and moved in Jan 1945. A request to CWGC may fill in the details for you.

I am planning a trip to Ancona and Casserta in September and would be happy to take photos for anyone. I would also like some help with a couple of things. My uncle Charles Samuel Frank Ashen, Sergeant Royal Engineers No 1896949, was killed on 16/12/45 and is buried at Casserta. This date seems to be after the war ended, any ideas how I could find out what exactly happened to him?
