I've always been led to believe that my grandfather was captured in Italy whilst serving in the Cameron Highlanders. Other than his name, I've not got a lot to go on. Can anybody give me a starting point?

Thanks in advance,

Roxy

Welcome aboard, and thank you for your grandfather's service.

Start with his military records at the PRO, and the history of the regiment...he might be in it.

Thanks. The web site doesn't appear too user friendly so it's either south to London or north to Cameron Barracks.

I'll let you know!

Hi,

You could try:

Army Personnel Centre,
Historical Disclosures,
Mailpoint 400,
Kentigern House,
65 Brown Street,
Glasgow G2 8EX

For telephone enquiries, please use the number below:

Telephone: 0141 224 3515 or 0845 600 9663

Fax: 0141 224 2144

The Ministry of Defence does not normally release information from a service record to persons other than the individual concerned or their next of kin. There is a search fee for genealogical enquiries which currently stands at £25.00.

Regards
Ali

I'm back after some time away - just got a bit lost!

Discovered a bit more about my grandad. He was a Cameron Highlander - enlisted in 1927 then again, after being discharged to the reserve, in 1939 to serve 21 years service. From the ICRC, I discovered that he was captured at Anzio on 29 May 1944 and was imprisoned in Stalag VB and Stalag VIIA. However, the big book of POWs (can't recall the name!) has him down as RSF. It does not appear that the Cameron's were in the orbat; however 2RSF were!

Roxy - you were led correctly as the 2nd batt. Camerons served in 11th bde of the 4th Indian Div. which had a noble history in the Desert - then Ethiopis - back to Tunisia - the two balltes at Cassino - on to the Trasemino Line after Rome - then over to the Gothic Line and finally Greece.
The Camerons served as the British element of 11th bde along with the 3rd Batt 7th Punjabi's and the 2nd Batt. 7th Gurkhas particularly in Italy - so his records should show where he was taken prisoner - but my money would be around Cassino as they had lost their most famous Major General - Tuker to sickness and the division was led by a Brigadier Dimoline for those two battles in which they were cut up very badly.

He could easily have been transfered to 2RSF .
I have 5th Div History will have a look what happened on 29th May.

edit: just had a look. Nothing for 29th but on 28th 2RSF were caught in a barrage by their own artillery whilst right up in the German wire.

Roxy - just caught up with the rest of your postings - you are quite right - the Camerons were not at Anzio but the Scots fusiliers were - in fact some of them were floating off shore in a barge when a submarine popped up alongside and a voice asked " who are you" - and on answering the "RSF's " - the voice then said " never heard of you " - and submerged once more !
