hi owen,
thanks for the info.
grandad was in fact a volunteer, enlisted before the war, i think about the beginning of 1912. ( he got married dec 1912 to a local hamilton girl, so must have been up there then) one reason why i was confused as to why he ended up in the cameronians, but he did well in them, ended up as an acting sgt/major.
