Re: Possible World Heritage status for Channel Island's Nazi fortifications

Spent a brilliant 2 weeks inspecting the Guernsey fortifications back in 2000.
Far more interesting than the World Heritage site I drive through every working day.....Avebury.

God, I haven't been in Avebury for about 30 years Owen.
The archaeologist in me is always torn between 'real' archaeology & WW2 stuff; guess which usually wins.
Never been to the Channel Islands, though I inspected some German stuff in the Pas de Calais last year.

Get yourself over to Jersey and follow the coast from the lower eastern corner clockwise... Fantastic, Underground overground scrambling over incessant concrete and guns until the light fails, some of the most beautiful coast I've seen to go with 'em. Definitely more fun than Bath.
Rest of the Island can be a little 'odd' though.

I love Avebury... some of the maddest people I ever met in a pub.
The stones are still a fake though.

Afternoon all,

Stumbled on this excellent digital 'then and now' comparison of some Jersey defence sites. Very clever, I thought.

That's the way to do it - really good jobs, might have to slip that into the Links here.

Remember that chap telling us about the guns ditched off the cliffs? I'd assumed from what he said that they were submerged, but this page reveals yet another thing that we missed:
Exploration Central - Guns
There were many things that we missed... largely as there's apparently so much to see.

Thats a great site - well done Capt. Seems a lot of fortifications remain!

You wouldn't believe it, GH, I could spend weeks exploring WW2 stuff on Jersey. Much better preserved, in the main, than comparable Atlantik Wall sites in Normandy for example. I only had 3/4 of day a couple of years ago and stumbled around in a state of delight and wonder.

...without a torch.

If going to see some Jersey concrete, take a torch, you'll be quite annoyed if you don't.

Indeed, a torch and possibly a fearless, lithe teenager......oh dear, that sounds a bit dodgy, doesn't it?
