Thanks to all for the info - much appreciated! handtohand22 - cheers for posting that telegram - very useful image. Verrieres - that's certainly an illuminating description of timeframes - and a sad accompanying story, alas. At least in this situation the family appear to have been kept informed throughout. I'm not sure that the chaotic retreats and long supply chains in the Western Desert would have allowed such prompt updates. |

You all always manage to astound me!

Sometimes, however, they are sober at their first deliberation, but in this case they always reconsider the matter under the influence of wine." |

vrob - as you alluded to time frames - the length of time beteen the Gazala Gallop - summer '42 and the Gothic Line Sept '44- gave the post office enough time to get the system well in hand - in my own case however - I was wounded 17th Sept '44 -my parents had a telegram to the effect that I was "missing believed wounded" - AFTER I had been a week in the 71st GH at Ancona - shipped down to the 98th GH at Bari - then shipped to 33rd GH at Catania in the middle of October .....at the same time as my first letter(Green Envelope) - written by a nurse at Bari arrived ! Cheers |
