Here's a fuller account of what 2/Lt Hay did from Saul David's book page 204..

He insisited , and I lost my temper so I walloped him with my revolver knocking him down into the mud in the side of the harbour. What could I do? I was a small cog and it wasn't in my power to surrender the Division-I didn't want to anyway. I don't know what happened to him, I suppose I was fairly hyped up with pressure of the situation and when he came to ask me to do something so stupid I saw red.
