Again Brian, the point would be that these components were not sent into the battle zone due to failing inspection. This is why the story is interesting and has more 'legs' than purely a bit of smoke and mirrors.

Where these stories come from? At least three respected authors, one of whom landed on that fateful day that you hit France, some Generals memoirs, and most crucially of all, the source that seems to be the origin; The Official Administrative history of 21st Army group (page 47) an understandably obscure contemporary report which we're awaiting and now have a solid lead on.

Until H or, or anyone else, has had a shufti at that source, can I politely request that unless someone has something genuinely new to add like Rich's bit of detail we lay off this thread, as it's getting very repetitive.
