book reccommendations please look

HI - I wondered if anyone can reccommend books relating to life in the United Kingdom from say 1900 to 1945? I am particularly interested in the relationships between the older generation, who may have fought in WWI and the generation growing up between the wars - the lifestyle, entertainment, jobs, pasttimes, language and slang, currency etc. Also descriptions of clothing, everyday items and so on.....any pictoral references would be useful as well

I am trying to do parrallel research about life in Germany from the turn of the century up until the end of WWII

Any help greatly appreciated!

Welcome to the site Rich, I think we can do better than a book.
We've several Veterans who were growing up then.

Hi - thanks for the welcome! I'm afraid I'm bursting with questions so I may well bore some of those guys to death! I'm just beginning to appreciate how much info there really is...

Not a book as such but worth as much as any I can think of; I reckon BBC's 'People's War' is the best starting point for such stuff. Absolutely tons of detail on there of peoples everyday wartime lives from a mostly British perspective.

Not sure it fits your remit, but one book I'd recommend would be "Mrs Milburn's Diaries" ISBN 0006359876, covers 1939-45 and not only covers "our" progress across the globe, but also has plenty of tea and cakes as well as the occassional gripe about the price of sprouts.
