Thanks Nick I would appreciate that.

This picture has always intrigued me. I understand it was done by blowing ink down a straw but exactly how I am unsure.

Taken from my fathers Red Cross "Wartime Log" this picture was drawn by J. Beesley who was in my fathers crew when they were shot down.

This drawing was made when they were in Fallingbostel and well illustrates the shortage of bed boards. Presumbly the bed boards had been taken to shore up the walls of a tunnel.

David,

We are not getting any reputation points for this posting. Better increase our pitch.

Nick, this one is taken from "Handle With Care" by R.Anderson & D. Westmacott. "Handle With Care" is a book of prison camp sketches drawn and written in prison camps in Germany. The book was reprinted in the '70's after originally being printed in 1946.

Nick the "Cuttings" sketch is interesting and revealing."Cuttings" or "Cuts" were found on the River Aire not very far from Drax.(Drax is on the Ouse). They were boat basins that were cut out of the land, usually at right angles to the river to connect loading wharves with the river. They were constructed in the 19th century and it is said that the ones at Brotherton and Fairburn on the Aire were constructed using French POW labour during the Napoleonic Wars. This was at a time when limestone was being quarried in the nearby quarries and the Aire was used to transport the limestone to the markets.

They have been disused since the early 20th Century and were left to nature and without husbandry became a natural habitat of wildlife. Fairburn Cut is now a feature of a well known wildlife nature reserve.

I am not aware if the Ouse had similar cuttings but it could be so.

Harry,

that is very interesting. I know my Father spent many a day fishing at the cuttings at Drax when he was young.

I will try to find out some more on this from my Uncle and will get back to you.

Regards,

Nick
