POW Liberation Germany

ex-POW Bill Balmer has told me that he was forced to labour on the von Putlitz estate, (See Map) At the end of April he marched for two days to a village called Dummerstorf.

On 2 May 1945 he was liberated there by an American Tank unit. That unit then made their way to Schwerin and left his Labour Unit in charge of the village until they were liberated again and moved to Lubeck.

I have a query, Bill said he saw the Russians and Americans on opposite banks of the Elbe when he was in the Putlitz estate. This spooked the Germans and that was why they made their way north towards Rostock.

I know the Elbe and Wismar were supposed to be the dividing line between the Allied Army and the Russians. It it feasable that Bill Balmer was Liberated by the Americans so far East?
