Awards to ex POW's via the POW pool

I wonder whether any forum members can help me solve a minor mystery for a local regimental museum.

The WWII gallantry index cards for officers and OR's held by the museum provide details of each gallantry award, when it was gazetted and who it was recommended by. There are a number of cards where the recommendation of the award is attributed as "recommended by POW pool". Given the dates of the awards in the London Gazette I can but assume that this relates to ex POW's. However, the museum has no evidence to suggest that the recipients were ever POW's.

Here are a few examples (all Hampshire Regiment men):
Pte 5499790 BUNCE Harold - Mention in Despatches (MiD) gazetted 14.02.1946
Cpl 5505049 BYNG John Richard - MM gazetted 21.02.1946
2/Lt 123354 MARTEL Philips - MC gazetted 21.02.1946
Sgt 5494760 EDWARDS Robert Henry - MiD gazetted 14.02.1946
Pte 5506980 DEGNIN Douglas Haig - MM gazetted 14.02.1946

Can any forum members confirm whether the men above were listed as POW's during the war.

Many thanks in advance for any help forthcoming.

Marc

From what you have written here, these men would not necessarily need to be POW's. All POW's were "debriefed" after they were freed from incarceration and may have nominated someone who was not necessarily taken prisoner! This nomination/information would only have come to light as/after the POW's were "debriefed".

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

So if these cards are held by the Regimental Museum, why are none of the awards listed in the Regimental History?

Sgt Edwards is listed as P.O.W. in Italy as of August 1943. Camp No. not indicated.
Could be an Escaper or Exchanged P.O.W.
