Info on camps in England

Steve over at online-archaeology has updated the map feature. If you click on http://www.online-archaeology.co.uk/....aspx?CATID=60
you come to an alphabetical list of camps in England; clicking on an entry will not only reveal more details, but also allow you to view the camp's location on googleEarth.
There are presently 371 English camps in the list; we're still working on map references to put the Scots, Irish and Welsh ones in too.

Glad you liked it, Adam. Wait till the rest are added.
I hope to do something similar with my list for WW1 one day too.

For more details regarding POW camps in the UK, you can look at file WO166 in the National Archive.

Hello Gordon.

My grandfather spent much of WW2 on the Isle of Man involved with internment and/or POW camps .
After 1945 , I think he was commandant (is that the correct term ?) of a succession of camps all over England . I have his war record , but can't decipher all the postings . The ones I can see are:

010
Report Drury House 26 Jan 1944
012 Alien Internment Camp
171 P W Camps
Posted to RPC Depot from 273 G Pur Camp
231? PW Military hospital 16/1/1948
RPC Stourport

He left the army on 2/3/1948

I would love to know what he was doing on the IOM and where he was stationed .
I 'm wondering where the post - war camps were .
At one point his address is Thwaite , St Mary's , Nr. Bungay in Suffolk , I think there must have been a camp nearby .

I also have a letter written to him by a German POW , Kurt Fleischer .
I tried to trace Herr Fleischer but he had just moved to Kenya (last year).
I guess I should have pursued it farther , there must be a forwarding address with the German pensions authority .

Kurt Fleischer's address in August 1948 is Horbling near Sleaford , Lincs.
He mentions Boxford and Raydon ; Debach? . There is a place called Hoswich - or is it Norwich ?

I've sent copies of my grandfather's war record and a couple of photos to the IOM museum . Is there someone specialising in the British camps who might like copies ?

Is there any more information available on the individual camps ?

Regards,
Linden

Dutch uncle

My mother had a Dutch-born uncle , and this evening she said he had been interned at the beginning of the war .
Would the Dutch have been interned ? If so were they released quickly ?

Hello Historian .
I was having another look at this thread this evening , and I noticed that the "RPC" ? camp at Stourport that is recorded on my grandfather's military documents isn't on the "Archaeology " list . Is an "RPC" something different ?

Sorry folks, I haven't checked this thread for a while!
51 Highland-
It's known there are quite a few camps all over Britain whose location was impossible to trace for various reasons, but AFAIK no-one is actually doing any ongoing research yet.
Trincomalee-
'RPC' is 'reception processing centre'. That list is drawn from one in a report done by English Heritage a few years ago, and they don't claim it to be perfect unfortunately.
Can you give me the camp name, number and function and I'll get the list updated?
I'll also see what I can dig up on those other camps you mentioned.
