I'll open the topic so that someone else can post a question.
The answer was- Cactus Airforce, the American code name for Guadalcanal being Cactus.

As I said in post #280, I knew the answer but laid off and did not think it obscure at all.
To say something is "Cactus" in Australia, (coll) means it is dead, finished, useless.
That is what I was making my reference to.
