Yes I think Operation Fry was the name of the commando operation to capture 4 island in lake comaccichio, while oeration Lever was the operation to clear the area between Reno and the southwest shore of Lake Comacchio

Fry is close but not quite warm enough! Led by Major Anders Lassen (who was awarded a posthumous VC) the clearing of the islands, and the north shore of the lake, would have not been possible if Operation???? had failed.

Congratulations, you 'roasted" both the others and me - I forgot the answer is found in my narrative!

A site packed with detail Gerry! but I didn't think to look there first, it came up using some convoluted google searches

I am on holiday from tomorrow so if someone else wishes to set a question in my absence then I'll set one when I am back w/c 8th Nov

OK?

Cheers

Ryan

During World War II it was the title used, during wireless communications of units of the Royal Armoured Corps. While usually only referring to the Commanding Officer of a regiment/battalion, some units also conferred it to Squadron and Troop Leaders.

Cheers, Gerry

Sunray was the radio codename for the CO of a unit. it was used throughout the armed forces up until the 1980s.

the only other two code names I can remember are "starlight" for the medics and Atoll for my unit in Belize!

--------------------------------------

Here are a few others:

"Standard code names for roles were also introduced in 1942. For example at any level and in any type of HQ or unit:

a commander was always referred to as 'Sunray',
an intelligence staff/officer was 'Acorn',
a G staff/operations officer was 'Seagull',
an A/Q staff/officer was 'Molar', and
an artillery branch/representative of whatever rank was 'Sheldrake'. "

As Ryan states that his question will come later, I guess it is up to me to ask the next - it is really a two-part one.

The so called "poor" performance of Calgary Regiment's Churchills at Dieppe is often stated as being that they landed on a "shingle" beach. This despite the fact, of the twenty-seven tanks that went ashore, fifteen managed to climb on to the promenade. Twelve Churchills did not leave the beach, however, ???? was only responsible for breaking tracks of four of the eleven that attempted to climb on to the promenade. However, tracks of some of the ten that went back to the beach were also broken by the "mystery" material.

Question 1: Of what material is the beach composed?
Question 2: What statistic indicated (later proven) that the Churchill was the safest tank to crew?
