Gibbo will become famous soon enough
I'll go for Charles Lindbergh who flew combat missions in the Pacific despite being officially only there to observe & advise. He was given a commission as a Colonel in the USAAF Reserve but had never served in any lower rank.

Good question Jimbo!!!! P.S. If I am not right (and I think that I wont) can you tell me if my line of reasoning is on the right track?
[/b]
No but that too was a clever answer and your line of reasoning is spot on.

Another excellent answer (I didn't realize there were so many), but not the correct one.

Ah Reverend Bob,

Mr Doolittle retired from the army as a Lt and a reservist, was brought back in as a Major, promoted to Lt Colonel, promoted to Brigadier General skipping the rank of Full Colonel causing much angst to the Army Regulars, and just happened to be an aviator who flew one single mission in the Pacific. That's sounds like a decent answer, what do you say Mr Spidge? What do you think of the good Reverend's answer?

Seems as if he would like us to do as little as possible so he can raid the forum and have another question.

I do believe that if someone is good at cryptic crosswords (as is the question by the way) you might get the answer on this page.

I was going to answer it but I thought I would give some one else a shot.

Get thinking team!

I wonder if the Reverend is good at cryptic puzzles? What say you Bob?

I look forward to Bob's next question if that is the answer Jimbo was looking for!

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

Yes Bob has correctly answered. Good job dear Rev.

As to Bob's question: Is it Normandy beach? When they hit the beaches the attack began.
