![]() | The WW2 quiz continues below. The current question was set by Glider at 6.28 pm GMT on 27/1/06 and is: "Sorry for the delay. If I may, which American ally was the first to fire its guns in support of the USA and in what circumstances." See part 4 for previous answers.

![]() | From # 4. My information is that the first action of the Pacific War (against Japan) occurred at about 8.50am, 7 December 1941 Malaya time. This was some 16 hours before the USS Ward opened fire on a Japanese submarine near Pearl Harbour. In the action a 205 Squadron RAF Catalina was conducting reconnaissance of the Japanese invasion fleet off Malaya when it was chased and shot down by Japanese fighters. I do not know if fire was returned...but I suppose it could be safely assumed. (Issue 33 Wartime - Australian War Memorial). Rgds Tim

![]() | I am a little confused here. I am not sure if I was right or wrong. But since Angie used the big bold letters I will post a question. I am a submarine. I served in the navy of my former enemy. I was captured after a being disabled by an airplane. What is my name (either one) and what kind of plane made me the possession of my enemy? |

Apologies Blackblue, however Glider passed the question without another response being received. With respect to your information it does not completely confirm a return of fire either. The question is interesting and could be posted as a separate thread if it needs to be investigated further. Quote:
Hi Jimbo, It was "spidge" who used the big bold letters. I am assisting Angie with the Quiz supervision. Glider was accepting your response as their was confusion on timing.

![]() | No probs spidge...just pointing out what is considered the first action of the Pacific War. Of course Glider is still correct in that he is speaking about supporting the Americans....the action I have outlined could not be correct as the Americans were not in the war to support when this occurred! Although there is a possibility Glider may have things the wrong way around....how do we know the Americans were not actually supporting the Dutch? ![]() Rgds Tim In August 1941, U-570 became the first and only submarine ever captured by an aircraft. Under attack, she surfaced and surrendered, and an arriving escort ship took control. U-570 subsequently entered the Royal Navy, where, redesignated HMS Graph, she served until she was wrecked off the west coast of Scotland in March 1944. The aircraft was a Hudson from 269 Squadron, later assisted by a Catalina. Rgds Tim

You are correct however the question in itself could be construed as ambiguos as it only specifies " Which American ally was the first to fire its guns in support of the USA and in what circumstances." This could have happened in 1939 with an "ally" firing in protection of an American flagged MM ship for instance. The question did not state if it was after the attack on Pearl Harbour (Britain, Australia, Canada etc were still seen as Allies of the US before the declaration of war 7th December 1941) it was assumed that this is what was meant. Agree? Yes/No

![]() | The question was aimed at being action in support of the USA and you are correct in that I should have stated something along the lines of 'After the start of the attack on Pearl Harbour which was the first Ally etc. The reason I gave it to Jimbo , was due to his information being something I wasn't aware of and with the difference in time zones ect could well have happened as the attack on Pearl Harbour was underway. I hope that clears up the confusion, for which I apologise for starting. David PS I still think it was a good question |

I agree! The forum is for the education of us all. I have posted items I thought to be correct, which have subsequently been proven incorrect.
