Second World War Stories

I Posted this on another forum, then was pointed in this direction by Andalucia. Hope you don't mind me posting it on here too.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Approx 25 years ago my fathers sister, Lillian Lamb ( Aunty Doll ), put articles in the newspapers all around the world looking for stories about peoples experiences during the second world war.
She herself was in the ATS, in fact all her family done their bit. She was born in Liverpool and moved with her family in the 1970’s to Burnley. She was a lovely woman who sadly passed away recently.
My brothers and I, when we were kids, even stayed for “Holidays” in Burnley with her family and I remember not wanting to come home !

All of the letters and documents she received, she intended to put into some sort of publication but as time went on, she had personal tragedies to deal with and never got around to it, some of the letters are in Hebrew and Dutch !
In her will she wanted them to go to the Imperial War Museum, which I will honour.
I have scanned some of them, which I would like to post on here, as a way of getting them published for her. I will let her daughters know as they would be very interested in all aspects of this forum.
I could start with a few Liverpool memories if that’s OK ?

Martin

I will scan and upload more very soon, Martin

Brilliant stories Martin, The Dutch story about losing the bag is very moving. Well done to you and Aunty Doll for keeping these stories alive.

Good stuff Martin,
Feel free to post as many as you like, and all credit to Auntie Doll for such a foresighted effort.
Do you know specifically what motivated her to send out the requests for stories in the first place?

Cheers,
Adam.

Hi Adam,
My Auntie had so many of her family in the services AND was in them herself, probably just wanting to keep memories alive and get as much documented before it was too late.
I have a friend who is now 80 years old and the stories he tells of his life, not specifically about the war but mainly local ( to Liverpool ) are superb, he has such a memory. Sadly these will be lost when he is gone, I'm trying to think of a way to record his life, maybe by video. He was after all, Leader of Liverpool City Council ( no, not Derek hatton ! ) and has so much to tell, politics, the way people lived, local factories that have sadly gone etc.

Martin

PS
I will scan and post more, very soon.
PPS. Anyone know Hebrew or dutch

Great woman, your Aunt Lillie. Thanks for posting the letters.

You do us proud, putting us before the Imperial War Museum.

Hi

Try contacting the North West Sound Archive. They may be able to help getting your friend interviewed.
