My Grandfather In The Navy

My grandfather served in the Navy during the war. He never really talked about his experiences and I had to learn about them from research. My grandfather served on a jeep carrier in the Pacific. Those were mini escort carriers that went along with the convoys. I read about him on a particular mission hunting down a Jap sub during the battle of the Phillipine Sea in '44. He was so sick during that operation with Maleria. He had a real close friend on the ship his name was Henry Fonda. Yes the famous actor who played Admiral Nimitz on many films. But back to the story at hand, I dont know if they ever got the sub or not.

My Avatar is the memorial to the 22 Commonwealth Coastwatchers at the Temakin Cemetery on Betio (Tarawa Atoll) who were beheaded by the Japanese on 15th October 1942. http://www.dva.gov.au/media/publicat...mem_beito.html

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

Smile Hi there!

Welcome to the boards, and thanks for your grandfather's service to his country in wartime.

You'll enjoy it here!
