PastScape website

Afternoon all,

New resource online -
'The What’s New pages of the PastScape website have recently been updated with an article commemorating the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Second World War;
ttp://www.pastscape.org.uk/News.aspx?id=NewsItem14.

The article explores the various themes and types of Second World War
heritage sites that have been recorded in the last 20 years and a number of interesting examples are highlighted. In a follow up to the successful HER Summer Forum on recording military sites, a news item also features on the Heritage Gateway website, reviewing the thematic surveys undertaken by staff at the National Monuments Record (NMR) to record 20th century military sites. This aims to provide all heritage professionals and those involved in recording military heritage with an overview of the content and scope of the recording projects carried out by the NMR up to now, and those which are on-going.

PastScape is the online version of the national historic environment record curated by the National Monuments record (NMR).'

Well worth a look.

British Air Ministry equipment numbers table.....

British Air Ministry equipment numbers table.....

Amazing table in wich presentation I readed, few minutes ago, isn't mine.....

Here is my attempt to compile a list of the Air Ministry equipment numbers and some notes about what they were.
Quote:
WWII military aircraft equipment is mainly built in a modular fashion, so that power units, aerial connections, control panels etc. could be varied according to the detail of the installation, which itself was given an ARI number. Most of the main equipment numbers refer to either receivers or transmitters and are the main functional parts of the installation. Other modules, such as power units, were numbered using a different system, often by numeric type number. Note that some transponders seem to have been numbered like receivers possibly to confuse the enemy.

World War II Military Situation Maps - (American Memory from the Library of Congress)

These may not be original documents but they are contemporary. I'd kill to get hold of original situation maps, anything from division level to SHAEF. I imagine orignal situation maps were wall maps with push-pins to track unit movement, but maybe there are photos of these.

I looked for a 'maps' thread and did not see one, so this seemed the best place to post.

The Viewer used on this site seems a bit clunky but one use should be enough to get the hang of it. To get you started just choose 'Browse by Date' on the left, pick a date from the list, click on the Thumbnail of the map and you're at the Viewer. Below the 'Zoom View' window pick the middle zoom, now click on the 'Zoom View' window and it will center to where you click. The red box on the 'Navigator' window (on the right) will show where you are looking. Click either window and it will re-center the zoom. You can change the zoom and/or window size, then click on the either window.

I think that this digital hemeroteque http://newspapers.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/home is possibly an useful tool.

A resource which is by no means obvious is the library of CONI, an Italian sports body. It's all in Italian, but searchable reasonably easily.

elenco testate | biblioteca dello sport

If you click on the link which says "Periodici sportivi da meta 800 ai giorni nostri" that will bring up a list of titles. Obviously most of it is sport-biased, but once Italy joined the war the daily sports paper Il Littoriale covered quite a lot of military matters, including publishing the daily Italian High Command bulletins. You can also find articles on military vehicles and aircraft in both l'Automobile and Motore e L'Automobilismo. Other titles which might be of interest are La Milizia Sportiva and Lo Sport Fascista.

The default reader is rather slow to load, especially when using Il Littoriale, since it's a book reader rather than for newspapers. It won't allow you to download pages either, but there is a way to do that by using a "hidden" reader, which can produce free jpeg images (providing you know the trick). I won't put those details up here, but please PM me if you want to know how to do it.

Another useful Antipodean newspaper site is New Zealand National Archives' Papers Past At present it only goes up to 1932, but they will shortly be adding their first wartime papers.
