RAMC Major KIA 1943 on local memorial but not on CWGC

Researching the local parish war memorial at Binfield , Berks and included under the date of 1943 is a Major A. BURTON. WILKES RAMC.
On searching the cwgc site under many ways of spelling name no record comes back.
I have also done a goggle search and nothing.
Are there any RAMC experts that could help shine any light on exact date and info on this man.
Many thanks,
Alan

Hi Alan,

This may clear it up!

There is only one Burton WILKES on the London Gazette, and that is Alfred Burton Wilkes (107002)

However, Capt. A B. Wilkes (107002) relinquished his commission on account of ill-health, 15th Dec. 1943.
http://beta.gazettes-online.co.uk/Vi...east=&similar=

So if he died after relinquishing his commission he won't be on the CWGC, even if he is remembered on a local memorial.

Cheers

Geoff

Blimey that is odd. Did similar and partial searches and no-one RAMC turned up at all.

Couldn't help but notice that the bottom name (a Guardsman) is also Wilkes. A chance, perhaps, that the Wilkes on the end of A.Burton is a slip of the mason's mallet?

e2a: Writing this up while spidge was solving it...

It looks like the two Wilkes were brothers. The Major was named Burton after his father. The Guardsman was not named as such but the CWGC names his father as xxx Burton Wilkes. It looks like the father and the Major shared the second name of Burton and the surname was Wilkes and not Burton-Wilkes.

Thanks all. I think Spidges comments could well be correct. As another name appears on memorial for 1923 which was not related to a KIA or DOW in either war. Infact the man died of TB after servicing in the RFC. It is said it is a result of his service in the RFC and flying to high ???
Perhaps Burton wilkes relinquished his commisson due to injury in service and later died of them whilst a civilian and the village wnated him to still be remembered ??

The Times of 1 Jan 1944 gives his date of death as 29 Dec 1943 - as he was retired through ill health 15th Dec 1943 I think highly likely that his death was directly linked to his military service - this would entitle him to a CWGC commemoration - anyone know if he is buried at Binfield?

Please PM me if anyone would like a copy of the death notice

Chris
