Guys this is great! Thanks so much! One of my older brothers also remembered some details. Grandpa did some engineering/construction work and from what he remembers he was with the Seabees so a LSD would seem to make a lot of sense. He was over there for several years, this ship came into the war later so it may have been only temporary transportation.

Any chance any of you might know how or where to get service records of him and his three brothers? They were in all different branches (one died in the Battle of the Bulge, one served in the Pacific and another in Europe) other than names that's about all I know.

Thanks again for your help! Its nice to put a name to that picture that's been around for so long.

Makes perfect sense, if you read the blurb on Wikipedia its says the boat was used as maintainace depot, You old mans Dad might have been on board longer that you think. Great wartime pic, seems to be very few of them about for such an unusual ships, you should put it on the wiki.

and she was in service until 1989. Thats not a bad career at all. fantastic looking ship ( I like odd designs!)
