British Honours and awards WOII

Would the citations only be available from the National Archives in Kew, or maybe also in newpaper editions?

There are very few citations in WW2 London Gazettes. The only way to get them for most awards is the recommendations that are now online.

Thanks D, have tried that but nothing turned up.

Hi Philip,

Researching decorations awarded to men of the North Irish Horse earned during World Wars I and II, it is obvious that the practice of quoting a citation in the London Gazette, except for the award of the Victoria Cross (and perhaps other of the highest awards) ceased during the former war - probably due to the sheer volume awarded.

Interestingly, citations (if published) usually employ the same words of the recommendation (on some forms 'commendation'), the latter being available online at Kew. Those made during the earlier war invariably were written by hand - WW II most time typewritten
Here's an example: http://northirishhorse.net/Decorations/MM/Church.html

Cheers, Gerry

Philip
Is there anyone specific you are looking for? I have a number of of citations for Airborne personnell. If you order them online they cost £3.50 which is a bit steep as it's only 25pence, I think, if you find them yourself!

Regards

Andy

No Airborne Andy, I am after the Royal Artillery ones for my webpage, but thanks for the offer.

Gerry thanks for the example, seems that I have to go to Kew again.
