Dear all

I am new to this forum and wonder if anyone might be able to help me. I am trying to find out which unit of the Royal Artillary my grandfather fought with in WWII.

All we know is that my grandfather James Joseph Whitehouse who lived in Stratford upon Avon Warwickshire, went to North Africa as a bombardier with the Royal Artillary.

He was captured by the Italians held in an Italian POW camp and then transferred to a German POW camp. In all we think he was a prisoner for about 3 years.

I would be most grateful for any help in my search to understand what happened to my grandfather in WWII.

I never asked him any of this as he died in 1969 when I was only 9.

Regards

Karen

Hi Karen,

The only way you can find out what unit he was in, is to get his service record from the Ministry of Defence. The address is listed in the pinned section of this part of the website (Ancestors in the War).

The RA had literally hundreds of units in WW2; and many of them served in both North Africa and Italy.

When you get this information come back and post the details here, and no doubt we will be able to add some extra info.

Paul

I have requested Grandad's service history from the army disclosures place.

My mum seems to remember that part of the insignia on grandads uniform was of a bear and staff. Which would represent Warwickshire if I'm not mistaken.

Was there a regiment of the Royal Artillary from Warwickshire?

Thanks

Karen
