Did anyone join from hope of a chance to escape or to make a nuisance to the Germans? Obviously they would say that after words, but was there anyone who clearly did so.

Eric Pleasants in his book Hitler's Bastards about the British SS that he only joined to get prisoner of war camp & that he was a nuisance to the Germans

An MI5 report in March 1945 listed 39 participants which is quoted in the back of Adrian Weale's book Hitler's Englishmen. They included a few ex-BUF members and other fascist sympathisers but also a number who joined to escape other punishments, usually for extra curricular activities with German women. A number did indeed join in order to disrupt the corps or try to escape and would be exonerated after the war by the British government.

Rabbi Hillel circa 30 BCE I was "Called-up" in Oct 1942 Served as a Wireless-Op with the 49th LAA (78 Div) from Apr 1943 to Dec 1944 (North Africa,Sicily,Italy, Egypt). The Regiment was disbanded in Dec 1944 and I was retrained (in Italy) by the Royal Armoured Corps. Served as a Loader-Op with the 4th QOH from Mar 1945 to Jan 1946 (Italy, Austria, Germany) Finished up as Tech Cpl for "A" Sqdrn. I was "De-mobbed" in Apr 1947
