![]() | Paul, I heard this story from a friend whose brother was in the sas unit at the time,as far as I know there is a commemorative plaque on the cathedral, having never visited france I would not know if there is any truth in the story but I could not understand why any one would lie about such a thing. Unfortunately the sources are dead now,I know the name but cannot post it for obvious reasons that is why I am trying to find out as much as possible about this incident. the french resistance was also involved. maby another battle forgotten about because of the slaughter that took place I dont know. allan wisener |

![]() | There was some shoting in and around Notre Dame during the service held there on the day after liberation. De Gaulle was present and notably refused to take cover. As far as I know, this was just sniping and not an attempt to destroy the cathedral. The French forces which fired back were, I believe, police and FFI. I have no knowledge of SAS involvement and I have never heard of SAS being deployed in the Paris area in WWII.

![]() | Hitler did order the effective destruction of Paris in August 1944 rather than let it fall into allied hands. The German commander, von Choltitz, at great risk to himself and his family of reprisals, did not carry it out and negotiated the surrender of his forces to the Free French 2e Division Blindee. A fascinating if sensational book on this is Is Paris Burning? by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre (1965), which was later made into a movie. I wish they would show it on TV, as it includes much genuine footage shot in Paris at the time.
