![]() | a snipers end Some time between June 9th and June 11th, 1944, this German sniper (Leos Stransky) had taken up a position in a bell tower in the French town of Neuville. The town was occupied by German and American soldiers, and soon the German was presented with an easy target. A group of American Rangers were arguing about taking a young French girl with them to a place of a safety. Shortly after the Ranger captain grabbed the girl from the arms of one of his men, the sniper fired and hit the Ranger soldier, a Private Adrian Caparzo. As he scanned the area for other targets, the sniper was shot and killed by his Ranger counterpart, Private Jackson. So accurate was Jackson's shot, it had passed through the German's scope and into his eye, killing him instantly. |

The village in the Ryan film is probably supposed to be Neuville au Plain, which is indeed near the Merderet River close to Utah Beach. The film protrays the sniper action as being sometime around D+5, whereas in fact this village was liberated on D+1. It's a great movie and much of it is based in fact, but most of the action (including this incident with the sniper) is largely made up.

The first part of Private Ryan was very realistic, it then descended into the usual Hollywood rubbish. Snipers in real life are arrogant little prats. Why so many were taken prisoner is quite beyond me. If you stay behind after the tide of battle has moved forward, and you continue to kill, then there is only one answer, No prisoner...EVER! Having had a personal dual with one in front of Caen., I would not give him the ghost of a chance. But I never located him. What does pay dividends, is to put a burst of Bren fire into any unusual shapes in trees and hedges. Just in case! Sapper |

I did enjoy watching the Myth Busters series a few months ago........but did find some of their science a wee bit suspect. The episode where they tested the suction powers of a sinking ship was most unsatisfactory.
