Gallery

Are there any plans for the Gallery? I, hopefully along with many of you, occasionally click on one of the interesting thumbnails from the gallery that appear on the right side of the Portal screen. However I rarely use it for more than a couple of minutes.
I believe that this vast resource is going to waste.
I find it virtually unuseable to search on, because so few of the pictures are named. The catagories are in need of an update too. I understand that historically this forum has had a large interest in the Holocaust. Nearly half of the Gallery's searchable catagories seem to be Holocaust related. While there is no catagory for Allied Tanks or vehicles.
I would like to offer my services to identify and name some of the numbered pictures. How do you suggest I can do this? Is it possible to amend the current name? Or would I have to use the Comments box.

Also, would it be possible to add an [IMG] code box, so that we could link to the pictures directly?

Let's get this done.

For example, does anyone know what this is? Gallery picture #5310

The gallery is indeed something of a problem.
The images were uploaded en masse by previous administration.
While I agree it's a mess and am more than willing to get in there and start tidying things up we have a problem with our access to the area to start doing so. Otto's on the case with this but it could take some time.
Once we've sorted the techy bits, due to the nearly entirely random way the pictures were added initially it would be a matter of manually giving titles to the pictures. While this may be impossible for some hopefully they could at least have tags relating to their content.
Ron had a thread in a similar vein a while back.
http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/barrack...else-nuts.html

I'll have another word with Otto and get some clarity on the situation.

An interesting previous thread, dating from around the time that I joined the forum.
I had not seen it before. I will start chipping away at the vehicles then.
BTW #5310 is, I think, a Polish Ursus Wz 29. Rare to find a picture of it even in black & white.

Ideally it'd be best if people can eventually edit the titles for themselves.
I agree that IMG code would be nice but I'm really not sure what the Gallery can conceivably do yet.
We'll see.

Adam

As Bill Shakespeare so aptly put it " Aye, there's the rub !"

It is now nine months since I made the original plea http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/barrack...else-nuts.html
for some form of caption to be given to a least some of these brilliant and evocative images.

I would still desperately like to know who the young ladies were with their Shields of David so proudly displayed. If Lee cannot supply the answer, could he at least allow me to investigate myself by releasing the copyright to me while I offer the image around for identification ?
It would also be of help to have the original photo in jpg format.

Surely the copyright does not belong to Lee? does it. I would of thought that all of this material is well into the public domain by now.

I dont know the limitations on copyright with regard to pictures but I hardly think that Lee has copyrights to all these photos. Some of these have been "doing the rounds" as it where on the web but one thing is for sure, we have a real asset on our hands with that gallery and its going to take work by all of us not just to caption each photo but also to ensure that the captions are correct!! The Technical ones will be easy enough I would reckon but the personal ones may be next to impossible to identify. Maybe we owe it to the people in the photos to try and caption them properly.

The photo gallery is how I found this forum to begin with. I tooled around for a day or so before realizing that there was a forum attached to it, or rather the gallery was attached to a forum.

I have several thousand pics, mostly of US subjects. I tried to contact Lee several times about adding them to the gallery, he nevered bothered to even reply to me. I guess it was too much trouble for him or he was too busy with something else.

I promise you gents, the gallery has made it onto my 'to do' list only very recently among the many other small issues being dealt with regarding tidying up the site.
I won't be held responsible for the previous months of neglect, or the haphazard nature of the arrangement as I acquired Administration powers only very recently, but they have bugged me as much as anyone else here & I do have every intention of ascertaining the situation 'as is' and then sorting out what we can.
As far as I know Otto owns the whole site, lock, stock & Barrel but I can't give you any definitive answer on the gallery status until I've talked with him.

Bear with us,
cheers,
Adam.
