I know how much agony you must have gone through. I had a half/body from chest to thighs only, but that was back in the 80's, modern tech, fiberglass & all. It was rather amusing when I got out of the Hosp 6 weeks later because the blokes all wanted to see if it really was impervious (it was) they could punch me in the gut as hard as they liked, I wouldn't feel a thing! (but they almost broke their fist bones!) The first week out of the Ops was awful though, 2 hours of drugged stupor and then 119.999 minutes of agony until the next shot (the nurses can't give more than 1 every 4 hrs)

I'm glad they managed to put Humpty back together....

no sapper i never had a spica bodycast or a fibreglass cast like freebird,i never had a cast at all.the bloke who fixed me up was a doctor mcdonald from south africa,he was working in the royal united hospital,in bath.that is where i had my operation.i then moved onto the spinal unit in salisbury.the doctor screwed a large metal circle on to my head, from which they could suspend large weights, this was to keep my neck very straight,i suppose it was some form of traction.i was kept in bed with this thing on me for eight weeks;lay still lee was what the nurses kept saying.like freebird i was in a diamorphine stupor most of the time, but i had a pump full of it next to my bed.good stuff that.yours,lee.

Lee. This may interest you, There was a young Dutch fellow that joined the USA airborne forces when Holland was partly liberated. In training he had a bad accident and broke his back. paralyzed from the waist.

He was invited back to the states, where a Chinese Doctor was prepared to operate on him, and try to connect up the nerves to operate his limbs. He went. and it was a lengthy op, but it had to be carried out without anesthetic as the nerve ends could not be found while in a coma.

He has wires coming out of the rear of his back, and they are attached to an "operating box" on his belt. We call him Byonic Bill, and he is still about, though very frail now. He would demonstrate how he could move his legs up and down at speed. Just for laughs.....
It is all perfectly genuine, because he was only to pleased to show any doubters the fine wires coming out of his lower spine back and into his control box. Byonic Bill!

or even:
earlier in this thread someone was on about a book called armageddon, slagging off our monty.was that not written by hastings.rather ironic that, sounds like tedder.how many copies do you think he wants to sell in the u.s.a. bloody traitor, yours very sincerely, lee.

Or perhaps this: market was an american debacle.failure to grab son bridge.gavin sendng 1 company on day 2 to capture the wilhelmena bridge at njimegen and needding british help to keep the advance routes open.im sorry, but this is my opinion.all garden units had to stop and help.

Now, if you are gonna make statements like that, then you had better back them up. I am a fair person, and I believe in treating everyone equally. My first reaction is not to go "oh Lee's opinon muct be cautioned by the fact that he has no access to records. I treat you as I do everyone else. I do this because you deserve to be treated equally, not favourably or less faourably but equally. Therefore I expect no more or no less than anyone else. If I am to treat you as equally as say Owen, Christos or Ron Goldstein (first 3 names that popped into my head) then I must say that if you are gonna make sweeping statements then, like everyone else, it is your responsiblity to make sure either: a) you can back it up or b) u know someone who can. I have given examples of situations where you have given your opinion. this is a public forum, it is accessed by member of the public. therefore we owe it to them to bakc up our claims with suitable proof. So in responnse to your post I say yes, well done on doing all you can to overcome your disability but I will judge you as I judge everyonr else in the interests of equality.

i am sorry if I have offended anyone with this.
Gotthard, are the Mod's going to open up the "Anvil" thread again? I thought it was an interesting one, I mean obviously Lee is not a big fan of "Ike" but he is entitled to his opinion, I don't think other members should take such offence. (and yes sometimes it does seem like the high commander is on a "lofty perch"! LoL) We should be all able to debate here. Just my 'umble opinion

I'll descend from my lofty perch & sort that for you.
I only closed it as people were getting so bloody grumpy and everything seems chilled now... which is nice.
(By the by, any closed history-related threads that have been shut for 'overheated' reasons in the past; I'm quite content to reopen 'em once the heat or irritation dies away, just send a PM.)

brian,i was offered an operation a while back,it involved putting a powerpack in the chest cavity, which had wires leading down your arms to the hands.the idea was to twitch the shoulder, this would open and close the hand, enabling you to pick things up.unfortunately, this was also a long operation and over the years my fingers had curled around, rather like someone with bad arthritis, into a kind of clenched fist.they would have had to snap each finger out straight,i did not fancy any of this really,so declined the operation.i use a normal garden peg, pushed between my 1st and 2nd finger,to smoke a fag or something longer.with this i type as well.my thum on my right hand works though,so i just manage to hook it through the loop on a cup,so i can have a cupper.i am lucky though,i have a wonderful mother and i also have a good son so all in all i am a happy man.yours,lee.
