dbf has a spectacular aura aboutdbf has a spectacular aura about
Irish Guards, 3 Battalion

Hello,

Update: Some new links to documents have been added to Awards List on Page 3.

I have started transcribing the War Diary from June 1944. The months from June to November 44 are complete.

Anyone who wishes to have a copy can contact me by PM for info - please state what any/all dates you are interested in.

I have also tried to add any casualties I could find on cwgc for 3rd Battalion Irish Guards. Now thanks to Geoff's search engine, I have been able to add lists of men from the 3rd Battalion who died. One list is in alphabetical order, the others are in date order and in cemetery order. I have added to the diary a few from 2nd Battalion as I have some info. about them. Also, please note that since men would have died as result of wounds received on previous actions, not all the casualties who died on a certain day will have died as a result of that day's action.

If I have info. or a photo for an individual or their War grave, PM me and I will place a link beside the name.

Some history of the Regiment including accounts of 2nd and 3rd Bns in North West Europe April 1944 - August 1944 can be found at:
History

At another link on page 139, can be found a litte info on 1st, 2nd and 3rd Bns., in the research into Sgt W Oulsnam KIA 3 Aug 1944: http://www.roll-of-honour.com/Sussex...004-Update.pdf

For info IRO James McRory MM, 2nd Battalion, died 24 Apr 1945, see link to thread:
http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/unit-hi...il-1945-a.html

A tribute to Major D.M. Kennedy M.C. was written by Robert Jocelyn, Earl of Roden. Sticky/John Kennedy served with both 1st and 3rd Battalions. [Contact me if you are interested in details from the book.]

I also have the IG History for WWII, any requests for look-ups please PM me.

JONKERBOS spelling is copied from CWGC. Can't do the search with other spelling, so it will remain. However, please note the correction by Philip on the thread, JONKERBOSCH.

If anyone knows where I could get a copy of the maps which are referred to in War diaries I would appreciate some advice.

June 1944

The following is a brief summary of the War Diary for the month of June 1944:

On 6th June 1944, D-Day, the 3rd Battalion was stationed at EASTBOURNE. They remained there until 0400 hrs on 16th June, when they left in two parties; the Vehicle party under Lt. Col. J.O.E. Vandeleur and the Marching party under command of Major D.H. Fitzgerald.

On 19th June the Vehicle party embarked on Liberty ship "Samphill" but the Marching Party did not embark on their ship "Llangibby Castle" until the following day. The latter put to sea, but anchored off Bembridge. Sailing was delayed for two days due to bad weather.

On the 21st the Marching party disembarked, marched to NORTH of CREULLY and spent the night there. By the 24th June they had been transported to near BAYEUX. On the same day the Vehicle party arrived in FRANCE but did not disembark until the next day, when they too set out for BAYEUX. The advance party arrived the same day!

On the 27th the Battalion took over the position held by the 5TH WILTSHIRES at BERMERES BOCAGE and had its first experience of being shelled.

Three men were wounded by shell or mortar fire on the 29th at BERMERES BOCAGE and three more at LA GAULE.

The Battalion suffered no fatalities during the month of June.

[If anyone would like more detailed information, please contact me by PM]
