Royal Engineers Bomb Disposal

Formed in 1939, ill equipped, no great training but with a serious job to do. Between 1940 and 1953, 326 lost their lives. Through their determination knowledge was learned on fusing systems and procedures put in place which saved countless lifes later. The unit now named 33 Explosive Ordnance Disposal still operates in all operational zones. I run the BD/EOD website and am interested in any stories photos ect that people can share.

Cheers
Pete

October 1939 first bombs dropped on the UK. At Hoy , Orkneys. The first unexploded bombs (UXB's) November 1939, Shetlands. 50kg buried 6 to 10 feet down. Realisation that if this happened in an urban area they would need to be immunised as the resulting damage would be to great to sustain if they were blown up where found. This was the beginning of a remarkable story. Watch out for further instalments.
