Hello from Finland

Hello to everyone, I am a Welsh man who moved to Finland last year with my Finnish wife. We are living approx 300 meters from Russia in a former border guards station (In Simo Häyhä's home village) built in 1956. Since moving here I have taken an interest in the winter and continuation wars as I previously did not know too much about them and I am looking forward to reading more. We are sorrounded locally by trenches etc and working in forestry I come across tank defences and parts of the Salpa line reguarly.
This looks like a great forum and I look forward to reading more!

Hi Jammpa

As I appear to be the only one online at the moment may I formally welcome you aboard

I have no doubt that you will enjoy your stay and I think it's fairly safe to assume that you are the first Welshman living 300 meters from the Russian border to join this forum !

Bore Da !

Hi Jammpa,

Welcome to the forum from Australia. You are a lucky man. Finland is the only country in Scandinavia where RAAF lads are not buried. (I collect photos of headstones of the 11,000+ who died during ww2)

Cheers

Geoff

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.
You chose dishonor and you will have war."

(Winston Churchill made this prophetic pronouncement in a House of Commons speech in 1938, just after Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich agreement with Hitler. Chamberlain returned from Germany with the signed agreement in hand, proclaiming that "peace in our time" had been achieved. Churchill attacked Chamberlain's "politics of appeasement" in this and many other speeches.)

What did the Australians do in ww2 and other conflicts? Check out this site:

Thanks for the warm welcome! I do have a paticurly bad habit of not taking my camera with me but will make a point of carrying it more and will hopefully post some pics in the future. Most of the battlefields are on what is now Russian ground, the sites on this side of the border are mostly defensive lines. Apparently the strength of the lines such as the Salpa line was so strong that it actually discouraged Russia heading any further West as it would have been so costly. There is also a Messerschmitt a couple of hours from my place that has been restored that I need to get some pics of.
